What are Cleveland Golf Clubs?

It was Roger Cleveland who founded Cleveland Golf in 1979. He started off in the golf trade making replicas of the classic golf clubs that were around in the 1940s and the 1950s. You may have noticed by now if you are reading through these pages in order that a lot of golf club manufacturers carry the name of their founder, mainly because they almost always started off as a small one person company making golf clubs, and Cleveland is no difference.

From the small start, Cleveland has grown to being regarded today as one of the foremost makers of innovative products in golf, and in particular they produce the best selling wedge on the major American tours. After 11 years of fast growth, Cleveland Golf was acquired by Skis Rossignol in 1980. Greg Hopkins came on board as president in 1997 as Cleveland aimed to expand their product line and also increase their marketplace visibility.

Ever since this happened the catalog of the company has seen new additions on a yearly basis. Take 2001 as an example. They already had a good selection of irons and wedges, but also added the Launcher fairway woods and driver collection to that.

The headquarters of Cleveland at the moment is in Cypress in California. There are over 300 employee's working in the company. They have 45 people in their sales force as well as a network of over 25 distributors around the world. They are represented on the US PGA tour by a healthy selection of successful pros - including David Toms - the 2001 USPGA champion as well as Vijay Singh, who has won both the Masters and the USPGA tour and is currently challenging for the world number one spot. Others include the likes of Jerry Kelly, Joe Durant, Steve Flesch and Andrew Magee. The company also employs Gary Koch and Bryon Nelson as dignitaries to represent them.

Since they are going to grow and grow, Cleveland are now building an ultra-modern facility at Huntingdon Beach in California. Since 1997, annual sales have quadrupled, which is why they need a building which at 130,000 sq.ft. will be almost double the size of their place in Cypress. Cleveland is now in the top five in terms of sales amongst all of the golf manufacturers in the world.

The new place will be completed towards the end of 2004, and addresses the concern of Greg Hopkins, about the lack of space for warehouses, parking, offices and manufacturing. It will keep Cleveland Golf as one of the forerunners in innovative products and in particular of wedges for both men and women. When you are next in a golf shop, have a look at their wedges. They look very good as well as playing well.
