Home theater is all about bringing movie magic into your home. If you’re thinking of buying a home theater, that’s probably because audio and visual entertainment is an important part of your life – in other words, you love music and movies.

You want to enjoy this in the comfort of your own home, without losing out on picture or sound quality.

Home theater systems range from simple packages costing less than $500 to stunningly complex, hi-tech systems costing thousands of dollars. If you’re on a very tight budget, you can hook up your existing TV to a simple all-in-one package that includes speakers, a receiver and a DVD player. That’s a good way of setting up a home theater without spending a lot of money. However, many people feel that it’s not a real home theater unless it has surround sound and a screen substantially larger than a regular TV’s. If that’s the case, go ahead and get yourself a bigger system.

The beauty of home theater is that it’s flexible. Although there are certain essential items (our page on essential equipment explains them all), there is huge scope for choice. Perhaps a big screen with great picture quality is your priority. If that’s the case, you have a wide choice of displays, from a plasma-screen TV to a front-projection system with pull-down screen. (For a really pin-sharp picture, you’ll probably plump for a HDTV-ready display – one that can faithfully reproduce the best definition available on DVD.)

However, perhaps you’re a retro fan who loves to combine old and new technologies. If so, you might want to connect your home theater to an old-fashioned VCR, or even a turntable for LPs. A good home theater system allows you to skip from a vinyl record to an MP3 playing on your PC.

This site isn’t for home theater experts. It’s for people taking their first steps into the world of home theater. If you already know the difference between DTS and DSS, and you’re confident about coaxial cabling, Guide4Home won’t tell you anything you don’t already know. However, if you want to move beyond a regular TV and stereo system, take a look at this site. It’s packed with home theater info, including tips on when to buy, advice on installation and pointers to some great furniture and accessories.

Of course, some people get the home theater bug so bad, they decide to build an extension to house all their equipment. We can’t help you with that, but we can give the ideas and advice that will get you started.
