Holidays and Leisure Luggage

Modern Baggage

Luggage in any form is one of those vital accessories that in a world of modern travel, we just can’t live without.

In an age where people are becoming increasingly mobile through the wonders of modern air travel, it is essential to own a set of luggage to carry your belongings with you. But the design, practicality and function of luggage has evolved over time to where it has become somewhat space age and revolutionary, the function of storing belongings and displaying social status stays the same.

Since the introduction of ocean liner travel many years ago, luggage has been an important factor in travel. In the days of steam ships, leisure travel was something viewed as a luxury for only the rich. People of high-society would pack most their belongings into huge steam trunks and set off on a cruise that would often take months. This saw the introduction of luggage labels from hotels in order to help transporters to get luggage to its final destination, but ultimately displayed a person’s social status by showing where they were staying – classy or not.

Leisure Luggage

The world was transformed with the introduction of commercial passenger airplane travel. Suddenly it was a lot quicker to traverse the globe, and as it was cheaper, it allowed the average citizen to travel. The introduction of the jet industry also meant a complete evolution in luggage, as baggage weight restrictions were brought in and also suddenly people didn’t need to take half of their house with them when traveling.

Luggage designed for modern travel

When the modern suitcase for airplane travel was first constructed, lightweight wood was the material of choice. While these cases were substantially lighter than the steam trunks of past, they were still exorbitantly heavy by today’s standards. This has eventually evolved over the decades as increasingly tighter weight restrictions are outlined by airlines (and even more strictly enforced).

In this day and age where travel has become a regular part of everyday life for some people, luggage designers are constantly striving to create more innovative luggage pieces to meet the demands of the modern traveler. These demands have seen design components such as removable wet packs for laundry, fold out suiters and wheels on bags – all features which have become part and parcel with modern luggage.

A flourishing industry has seen a huge market of luggage manufacturers producing a range of products for the market. These can be anything from adventure and casual lines through to goods designed specifically for the frequent business traveler.
