Hobie Cat Kayaks
The Mirage System and Fisherman's Quest
Hobie kayaks are manufactured by the Hobie Cat Company, a leading manufacturer of kayaks, catamarans, sailboats, and float cats for fifty years. Dedicated to watersports of all kinds, Hobie have pioneered new technologies and designs over the years and are responsible for the revolutionary Mirage Drive pedalling system – a technology used in their range of pedal driven kayaks.
The Hobie Cat Company produces a range of nine kayaks including the Mirage series with its unique pedal driven design. This revolutionary new propulsion system means you can kayak hands free through shallow or deep water and travel faster than you would with traditional paddling systems.
How does the Hobie Mirage system work?
When using the Hobie Mirage system you pedal in a motion similar to that on a bicycle. As the leg muscles are larger than those in the arm it allows you to gain more powerful propulsion than you would with a paddle. And because there’s no paddle, there’s no dripping - so you remain dryer too.
The pedals are easily adjustable to accommodate any height of pedaler and their back and forth movement produces a long, smooth stroke so the kayak is quiet and there’s no splashing. The efficient movement also means that it doesn’t take much effort to reach full speed – much less effort than if you were paddling. The fin system also creates much less drag than a propeller system would and so is super efficient.
Consequently Hobie Mirage kayaks glide effortlessly through the water, and their sturdy design makes them very stable. Internal cargo bays create plenty of storage space and the kick-up rudder makes steering simple.
To paddle in shallow water the fins can be easily folded up under the hull and remain like this for a beach landing. Once you’ve finished for the day it’s easy to remove the fins for transport or storage.
Other Hobie Kayaks
Hobie also produces a range of traditional kayaks in roto-molded polyethylene. The Quest is Hobie’s ultimate fishing design with a very fast but stable hull and excellent cockpit design. Two large hatches give plenty of storage space, there are three rod holders, and mesh-covered stowage pockets to make sure you’ve got everything you need close at hand.
