Hitch Bike Racks / Step Bumper Systems
A receiver hitch or step bumper system is necessary on the vehicle for using the hitch-type bike racks. There are other racks that will also utilize the same hitch mount systems, such as ski racks, and storage boxes. The access to this type of carrier is very convenient and they usually allow access to the rear of the vehicle or hatch while in place and loaded with bicycles by folding the rack down. These racks can be locked to the hitches, and install and remove easily. This type of system allows up to five bicycles to be transported. These are also a good choice if more than one vehicle will be using the rack, however some vehicles do not have the capacity for a hitch system. Some ball mount bike racks are made to be used with a 1 ¼" ball, and others utilized a 2" ball. This type works well for RV vehicles such as van bike racks, camper bike racks, pop-up camper bike racks, and SUVs. Many of this type will also be compatible with mountain bikes.
Hitch trailer type carriers are also an option with some bike carrier manufacturers, and are acceptable for most vehicles with a hitch system.
