Flokati Rugs - Beautiful woolen area rugs

Modern woolen rugs

Flokati Rugs
Flokati rugs are beautiful soft woolen area rugs typically made in Greece or Eastern Europe. They are naturally white or cream in color and are exceptionally soft under foot - perfect for bedrooms and living rooms especially during the colder, winter months.

It is widely believed that the Vlachs, a 13th century civilization native to the mountains of Eastern Europe, were the first people to produce the flokati rug. The Vlachs were shepherds by trade and would have woven their flock’s wool into rugs during the winter to supplement their income.

Flokati rugs are generally priced according to their weight and thickness, as this determines how luxurious and fluffy the rug will be. You will find that these rugs are classified by their weight in the following way: 1200g/M2, 2000g/M2 etc. This simply describes the weight of the rug for every square meter of its area. So 1200g/M2 means that each square meter of flokati weighs 1.2kg, 2000g/M2 means that each square meter weighs 2kg and so on.

Although the tradition began as a small community industry using the wool from families’ own sheep, the production of flokati rugs is now a huge business and manufacturers now use materials from all over the world, importing wool from New Zealand which is considered to be the very best quality.
