As far as wood framing tools are concerned, this could be anything from a saw, a hammer and some nails to a large radial saw and portable power joiner depending on how ambitious your creations are going to be. Here are some of the necessary basics to get you started:
Picture Frame Wood Supplies : The basic tools
Backsaw – get one that cuts cleanly and smoothly and make sure you use it safely.
A miter box – crucial if you want to cut your frame to the right angle and available for as little as $10.
Measuring tools (yardstick, combination square, lead pencil, steel tape measure or rule) – the four basic tools you’ll need if you want to make your own picture frame, marking and measuring spot on is vital. Make sure your pencil is extra fine as this will give you a greater level of accuracy.
Hammer – the best type for picture-making is a claw hammer. These come in different weights and the one you choose is very much a personal thing, although something along the lines of 10 ounces is usually about right.
Nails – buy a range of nails so you have always got the right one available. Examples of nails used in the making of frames include casing nails, box nails, common nails, roundheads and flatheads.
