Rustic Picture Frames:
Wooden and Western Style Frames
Frames with that rustic western look are great for displaying pictures or actual objects of the natural world, for example, flowers, birds and insects.
A rustic picture frame can be anything from simply a series of twigs bound together or a large wooden mount made of distressed reclaimed timber. Or to achieve a really rugged feel, how about a frame with a western theme? You can now buy weathered wood frames decorated with miniature cowboy hats, sheriff badges, lassos and longhorns.
With so many frame distributors in North America, many of which now operate online, you really should not have any difficulties finding an attractive rustic frame for your pictures and photographs. However, if you really can’t find what you are looking for or simply fancy making one yourself, here’s how to create a reclaimed timber frame at home…
Make Your Own Rustic Frame
Cut four pieces of reclaimed timber to the desired size. Sand the wood edges lightly to remove any sharp edges.
Cut a piece of hardboard so that it sits one inch away from the edges of the frame. To this, stick a piece of felt onto one side and a decorative sheet of paper onto the other using fabric glue.
Turn the timber onto its face and screw the hardboard onto the back with the felt side facing you.
Turn the picture fame the right way round and nail in some corner brackets where one piece of wood joins another – this will give it a real rustic feel.
