Oval picture frames tend to be best-suited to photographic portraits, but can work well with other artwork, such as close-up shots of flowers, trees or birds.

The frame itself can be made of any of the materials you would find in a regular, rectangular frame, for instance, wood, silver, leather, etc.

Of course, once you have chosen your frame, you need to give some thought to the actual framing process. If you are using a frame with a glass front, as opposed to plastic or acrylic, you may find it beneficial to invest in some mounts. Lying glass directly on top of a picture will cause condensation to build up on its surface; potentially devastating if the picture in question is of any value, be it monetary or sentimental.

Oval picture mounts can be purchased from any good framer or craft store. However if you are framing a picture that does not conform to the conventional framing sizes (see our section on picture frame sizes for more information), you may find it easier to cut your own mounts.
