Picture Frame Mouldings
Do-it-Yourself
If you are making your own picture frame moldings, the cheapest and most widely available soft woods include pine, cedar and redwood. For hardwoods, look for mahogany, oak, walnut, maple and birch.
Some of the best-priced moldings are those made for construction purposes, such as parting beads and lattice originally manufactured to complete furniture or other carpentry work.
Some of the more common types of molding include bull-nose stop, drip cap, base shoe and cove mouldings. These can either be used independently or added to other mouldings as a decorative liner.
Using commercial or ready-made frame moldings make the whole framing process much easier. But you will still have to make decisions regarding materials, colour and design and which type of moulding is going to best complement the picture you are framing.
