Framing your pictures in glass is one of the best ways to conserve a painting or precious photograph. Glass is noted for its resistance to dust and dirt and doesn’t scratch as easily as acrylic and plastic frames.
One thing you should be sure to do when framing a photo or picture within glass is to first place a covering mat on the item to be displayed so that it does not come into direct contact with the glass itself.
This is because the process of mounting creates an air space between the glass and the picture, thus reducing the risk of damage brought about through condensation
Glass Picture Frame Sizes
The standard sizes, in inches, of pre-cut glass to be used within a frame are as follows: 8x10, 9x12, 11x14, 12x16, 14x18, 16x20, 18x22, 18x24, 22x28, 24x30, 24x36, 26x32, 30x40 and 36x48.
If you are planning to hang your picture in a very brightly-lit room or space, it might be worth your while investing in some good non-glare glass. Although the picture behind the glass will experience a small loss of clarity, this is nothing compared to the distortions it will suffer if it is placed behind highly reflective standard picture glass.
Acrylic is an excellent alternative to glass, especially if you are hanging a very large picture and the weight of the entire piece is an issue. However, it doesn’t usually offer as flat a surface as glass will, and it can also be prone to scratching.
