Kitchen Worktops - Pros & Cons of Top Materials

Pros and cons

Kitchen Worktops: Wood Worktop
Kitchen worktops receive more than their fair share of wear and tear. On a daily basis they can endure hot pots and pans, sharp knives, rolling pins, water, greasy marks and stains. Not all kitchen worktops are created equal so it helps to know what makes some better than others before you make your selection.

Granite Worktops:

Granite still reigns supreme in the style and durability stakes, but it is also streaks ahead in terms of price.

Pros: Extremely durable, heat resistant, looks great, won’t crack.

Cons: Very expensive, may require periodic applications of sealant, does show dust and greasy finger marks.

Engineered Stone:

Like granite, engineered stone is also at the high end of the kitchen worktop range. It is usually made from quartz and there tends to be a wider range of colours than granite.

Pros: Very durable, heatproof, water resistant and easy to clean.

Cons: Expensive

Laminated Worktops:

These are some of the most popular worktops because they’re extremely cost effective and they’re easy to maintain.

Pros: Inexpensive, durable, easy to maintain, available in a wide range of colors and textures.

Cons: Easily scratched and scorched, high-gloss laminate will show dirt, dust and water.

Ceramic Tile Worktops:

Tiles can provide a wonderful earthy touch to your kitchen. Ceramic tiles are made from clay that has been dried and then fired in a kiln.

Pros: Durable, heat and stain resistant, mass produced tiles can be inexpensive, available in a wide range of colors.

Cons: The grout in between the tiles can stain easily, tiles may chip or crack.

Wood: (Butcher’s Block)

Like tiles, wood can also give your kitchen a nice natural feel. Most wood worktops are crafted from strips of edge grain or end grain.

Pros: Easy to clean, can be sanded down and resealed if required, look great when rubbed down with oil.

Cons: Hot pots and pans will leave marks on it, they can be damaged by water.

Stainless Steel:

Stainless steel worktops are not only durable but they look very sleek and stylish as well.

Pros: Durable, waterproof, heat resistant, easy to clean, contemporary style, and it co-ordinates well with chrome appliances.

Cons: It can’t be used for cutting as it will scratch and dent, expensive.
