Kitchen Units - Design Options and Ideas
Ideas for kitchen units
Kitchen units provide the bone structure of your kitchen, setting the tone and style for the rest of the room. They also account for a considerable chunk of your kitchen redecorating budget, some say approximately 40 to 50%.Before you start spending on a kitchen unit, it helps if you have a clear idea of the overall style you’re trying to achieve. A great way to help define your style is to keep a scrap book of pictures from magazines and brochures that you like the look of.
There are basically three types of kitchen units, pre-built (rigid), self assembly (flat-pack) and custom-made. Custom-made units are the most expensive of the three, because they are designed specifically for your kitchen. Pre-built units are usually more expensive than self-assembly because they require less work to install. Whereas, self assembly units are the cheapest, because they require more work on your part to put together.
Custom-made units are ideal if you have an unusual shaped kitchen that won’t accommodate pre-designed cabinets. Custom-made kitchen units also give you more scope to personalize your kitchen with storage solutions to meet your needs. These may include: Pull-out drawers for pots and pans, wine racks, vertical dividers for trays, pull-out or walk-in pantry cupboards and appliance garages.
The skeletons of most fitted and wall kitchen units are made from chipboard with a different material used for the cabinet door front. The main materials used for kitchen cabinet doors include: Wood, laminate and glass.
If you settle on a wood, you’ll also need to decide whether you want solid wood or wood veneer. Veneer is less expensive than solid wood and it isn’t affected by high humidity levels. Veneer can also help to give more of a consistent look, because a solid wood door is usually made from lots of thin strips.
Laminate cabinet doors are a great option if you want a product that is basically maintenance-free and relatively cheap. Laminates can also come in virtually any color, texture or shine you want.
Glass cabinet doors are a great way to add a bit of variation to your kitchen. Instead of having all of your cabinet doors in laminate or wood, you could use glass doors for those cabinets where you want to display crockery or glass ware. Frosted glass is often a good option for contemporary style kitchens.
