Granite Kitchen Countertops - An Overview

Qualities of Granite Kitchen Countertops

Granite Kitchen Countertops
Granite kitchen countertops are still considered to be the crème de la crème of kitchen benches. You might have to mortgage your house to buy one, but they will last a lifetime and look good at the same time. The term granite comes from the Latin root word “granum”, meaning “grain”.

This grain like appearance gives granite a one-off kind of beauty that is hard to replicate in synthetic materials.

The color range of granite is quite extensive, but because it is a natural material there can be marked irregularities within each countertop. The extent of the variation is hard to notice on a small sample, but some slabs of granite can have large, dark, amoebae shaped areas. The best way to avoid this is by visiting the granite supplier yourself so you can pick out your own slab.

Granite is a naturally occurring porous stone and it is second only to diamonds in hardness. It is extremely durable, it won’t scratch, crack, chip or scorch and if you choose to cut on it you’re more likely to damage your cutlery than your granite kitchen countertop. It's a definite "solid surface."

However, if a granite kitchen countertop isn’t sealed correctly and regularly it will stain, especially in heavy use areas, such as around the sink and cooktop. Even with sealing, spills will stain if they are not cleaned up quickly, but the sealing does make stains easier to remove. The fabricator, who cuts the slab, should do the initial sealing but after that it should be resealed approx once a year, or more often in heavy use areas.
