Chairs are like a pair of shoes, they fit people differently, so make sure you try sitting on one before making a purchase. There is no point in having a beautiful set of kitchen chairs if they’re going to make meal times uncomfortable. The first kitchen chairs, were probably anything but comfortable, they were built like stools with a wood backing that was often carved with decorations - little padding.
Kitchen chairs are still traditionally made from wood, but other products such as metal, leather, wicker and synthetic options are growing in popularity. In recent years, there has been a big demand for metal frame chairs these are usually made from steel tubing, finished chrome, lacquered steel, or aluminum. The kitchen stool has also made a comeback in recent years, with many kitchen designs incorporating breakfast bars and kitchen islands.
When selecting chairs or stools it is important to choose the correct size, chairs and stools usually come in three standard heights. Chairs have a height of approximately 45 cm (17.7”) and these are suitable for lowered worktops or tables that are approx 72cm (28.3”) high. Breakfast bar stools have a seat height of 60cm (23.6”) and are suitable for standard kitchen worktops that are approximately 90cm (35.4”) high. High bar stools are approx 75cm (29.5”) high and they are appropriate for raised worktop heights or tall poser tables that are approximately 108cm (42.5”) high.
Always remember, kitchen chairs are some of the most hardworking pieces of furniture in your home, so make sure they are built to take a few knocks. If your chairs are likely to be holding a few heavyweights or you just want a chair that is big on strength, make sure you buy a style that has a continuous back leg that goes on up to the top of the chair. Chairs that have legs that peg into the seat from the top and the bottom are not as strong, because the joint is the weakest point of any chair.
