Kitchen Carts - A Stylish Addition to any Kitchen

Role of a cart in the kitchen

Kitchen Carts
Kitchen carts are a great solution if you can’t afford to spend thousands tearing down walls or extending old ones to provide more storage space.

Those that come equipped with cabinets, drawers and shelves not only provide ample storage space but the worktop area can also offer extra preparation room.

With innovative design and sleek modern materials, a kitchen utility cart can also make a stylish addition to any kitchen. These days, they can be constructed with anodized aluminum frames, natural wood or marble tops complete with stainless steel mesh for drying pasta. Features might also include: Racks designed for storing, wine, utensil caddies and paper towel holders.

While some may think utility carts are just a passing gourmet gadget fad, they’ve actually been around for more than a century. In the1830s, Prince Alexander Borisovitch Kourakine, the Russian ambassador to Paris was instrumental in the advent of the kitchen cart when he introduced service a la Russe. This type of service allowed guests to remain seated while they were served dishes on the menu, instead of the traditional buffet style. This new style of entertaining also introduced service au guridon, in which the dish was presented for the guest to admire and then placed on a side table for preparation and carving. The guridon then eventually became a wheeled cart for displaying deserts, cheeses and other tasty nibbles.

If you do decide to purchase a kitchen cart here are a few care tips to make sure your kitchen cart can go the distance. Never use a steel brush on the cutting surface or wash the block with harsh detergents. Water, fluids and moisture can cause the most damage to a wood-topped cart, so don’t soak the block as it may cause water to seep into the wood. Don’t allow foods to sit on the work surface for long periods of time and always clean the surface thoroughly after cutting fish, seafood, poultry or strong smelling foods such as onion and garlic. If you have a wood top on your cart also make sure you periodically apply mineral oil to the surface with a rag using circular movements.
