Kitchen Cabinets - The shop front of your kitchen
Stock, Semi-custom and Custom Options
Kitchen cabinets are like the shop front of your kitchen, if you don’t have the cabinets looking good, it is hard to find the rest of the kitchen appealing. As well as being visually important they also make a big impact on your budget, accounting for 40 to 50% of the total cost of a kitchen remodeling project. While they may be one of the most expensive kitchen items, think of them as an investment that will pay off if you make the right choices. Here are a few tips to provide some basic background information.
Kitchen cabinets fall into three different categories: Stock, semi-custom and custom. If it’s cheap and cheerful that you’re after, stock cabinets will be ideal. These cabinets are the least expensive, as they’re constructed in standard shapes and sizes in a limited number of wood or styles. They also don’t offer a huge range of accessories beyond standard drawers and cupboards, but it is usually possible to take them home from the store the same day.
Semi-custom cabinets are more expensive than stock cabinets but they are not top of the range. Semi custom cabinets are usually factory built in standard sizes and styles after you have placed an order.
Custom made kitchen cabinets are at the top of the range and the most expensive. They are usually constructed in a workroom or on-site to designer specifications. These cabinets are ideal if you have an unusual-sized or irregular shaped space in your kitchen that won’t fit stock or semi-custom cabinets. Custom made cabinets can be made in any style with any material available. You can also choose any storage solution to suit your needs, such as pull out shelves for pots and pans, wine racks, pull out pantries, Lazy Susan vertical dividers for trays cutting boards and baking sheets, pullout bins, and an appliance garage.
