Selecting the style of master bedroom furniture

Master bedroom furniture can set the tone for the furniture in the rest of the house. If your master bedroom has an iron bed, ivory linen and little else, it's a fair bet that the rest of your house will be pale and minimalist. If patchwork quilts and rag dolls are competing for space with your stenciled dresser, it's likely that the other rooms are country-style and homey. However, this isn't always the case. The master bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the house, but it's also a private space, so it's a place where you can be a little more creative, a little more crazy, with the décor than you might be elsewhere in the house.

One of the most popular "statement" pieces of master bedroom furniture is that regal-looking staple, the four-poster bed. Four-posters tend to dominate a room, so you will probably find that the style of your bed is echoed in the rest of the master bedroom furniture and fittings. A dark-wood four-poster with an Arabian Nights -style canopy lends itself to spice-colored draperies, a dark-wood wardrobe and exotic ornaments. Your master bedroom is a place to indulge your campest fantasies - should you so desire - so don't be afraid to accessorize the general Arabian theme with a laundry basket shaped like a magic casket, or even a scimitar on the wall. Or you might take inspiration from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, installing a medieval-style four-poster. If you do this, your signature fabrics should be rich brocades, and you should search out antique or antique-style furniture.

Perhaps sci-fi books and films strike more of a chord with you than Arthurian legends or exotic tales of the East. If so, there are excellent ways of making a futuristic statement with your master bedroom furniture. Find a bed supported by metallic legs, then accessorize with furniture that might have been ordered from outer space.
