Magnets are no longer the reserve of the fridge door. Instead, as the water passes through the magnetic field, the chemical make-up of the mineral particles in the water is altered to such an extent that the water behaves like soft water.
There are certain advantages to using magnetic as opposed to other forms of water softener. Not only do you eliminate scale and extend the life of household appliances, you are spared the hassle and cost of maintaining a traditional water softener and eliminate the potential for any salt to enter the water supply. These are effects that can be measured and calculated. Some manufacturers make more extravagant claims that have no scientific proof, for instance that people who consume magnetized water are less prone to disease.
Some people are skeptical about the effectiveness of magnetic water softeners, and perhaps rightly so. In order to function at its best, the system needs to be matched to the property's water temperature, flow rates and chemical composition. This means that systems will vary between properties. The magnetism is also affected by any electrical charge, so interference from nearby sockets will reduce the system's effectiveness. Perhaps most importantly, magnetic water softeners have been proven to under perform when compared to traditional water softeners. So if you decide to opt for magnetic water softeners, ensure you realize that although they come with many advantages, they have their disadvantages too.
