Fire Alarms, Home Security

Do I really need a fire alarm system?

Fire Alarm System

"in just 3 minutes (the time taken to go to the bathroom) an unwatched flame can turn into a lethal uncontrollable blaze"

Fire alarm systems alert you at the early stages of a fire giving you maximum escape time, reducing the chance of injury and damage to you and your property. A fire alarm system is often incorporated in a whole home security system. As well as monitoring your property for intruders it will include a fire alarm and will alert the appropriate authorities in the event of an emergency.

Most of these security systems are monitored at an external center and 24-hour surveillance can prove rather costly. However, if you already have a security alarm system in place, adding a fire alarm system to it will add little to your bill. Due to the expense of installing the initial system, this is usually seen on large properties. General domestic properties normally install a more simple smoke alarm.

Smoke Detectors

What most people refer to as a fire alarm system is in fact a smoke alarm. Throughout America, approximately 5,000 deaths occur each year from house fires. Smoke inhalation rather than the fire itself however, causes most of these deaths. Fitting and maintaining a smoke alarm is an easy and inexpensive way of protecting yourself and your family from the dangers of smoke and fire. When a smoke alarm detects the first hint of smoke it sets off a piercing alarm, loud enough to wake the heaviest sleeper and allowing time for them to get out of the house.

Though wired smoke alarms are available, the most common are battery operated. As such it’s important to ensure you check the batteries in your alarm regularly and certainly after a long absence from the property. Battery operated alarms give off a warning ‘chirp’ when the batteries are low but the battery power will only allow this for about a month, after which it will be too weak. It would be terrible to find out too late that the batteries in your alarm are empty. Smoke alarms are cheap and readily available in most household stores. They are easy to install directly onto a ceiling or high wall. The more alarms you have, the better your chance of survival in the case of a fire.
