Advances in architectural design and building construction techniques mean that today’s buildings are effectively ‘closed units’, where airflow is cut to a minimum. While increased energy efficiency is welcome benefit, the downside is that air soon becomes stuffy and unwanted airborne particles quickly build up. As we seal ourselves in with better window fittings, insulation and mouldings; there’s an inevitable cost to our health. One solution is to invest in an air filter.

Installing an air filter is a relatively cheap and easy way of dealing with a large number of potential health problems. The American Lung Association estimates that dust mites are a causal factor in up to 80% of asthma sufferers and a record number of people now suffer from allergies. Besides making the air safer to breathe; air filters also make it more pleasant by removing nasty odours. A final (often overlooked) benefit is that less dust means less time spent cleaning.

If you’re in any doubt about the virtues of installing an air filter, it’s worth considering that the average person inhales 62 pounds of air and 4.4 pounds of water each day (which can add up to a lot of impurities). Studies suggest that during the summer months, indoor environments contain between two and five times more pollutants than the air outdoors. Come winter and the situation takes a turn for the worse; as we barricade ourselves against the cold indoor pollutants can rise to 100 times higher than outside. If you then consider that we spend an average of 90% of our time indoors it’s easy to see what a difference an air filter could make.

Air filters work by tackling the main elements of airborne pollution, notably; microbes, particles and gases. Most impurities are invisible to the naked eye, but if you invest in a state of the art air filter you can be confident that it will remove virtually all particles larger than 0.3 microns in diameter.
