Air conditioners have become an integral part of many homes and commercial buildings across America. There are lots of different types of cooling systems, but they can be separated into two main categories; room or unit air conditioners and central air conditioners. Unit cooling systems can be further divided into portable, window, casement and wall mounted units. Central air conditioners can be further categorized into split systems with ductwork, ductless or mini-split systems and roof top units.

Willis Carrier produced the first safe ‘Apparatus for Treating Air’ in 1902 but it was not a luxury to be enjoyed in the home until the 1940’s. The term ‘air conditioner’ was coined by an engineer by the name of Stuart H. Cramer who used it to describe an air treatment device very similar to what is today known as an evaporative cooler. These machines were designed to add water vapor to the air to keep it moist in order to ‘condition’ the yarn in textile plants.

Air conditioners have been a most welcome invention in the hotter and more humid parts of the country, not only because they provide relief from the heat but also because they dehumidify the air by removing excess moisture. This climate-control technology has improved lives right across the States by providing better living, working and playing conditions. Cooling technology also paved the way for other innovations such as space exploration. Without a man-made climate, traveling to the moon and diving to the depths of the ocean would not have been possible.

Industrial manufacturers were the first to enjoy the benefits of cooling and climate control. From the 1880’s manufacturers of chocolate, pasta, tobacco, color printing and textiles began attempting various ways of controlling the temperature and humidity fluctuations that affected their products. Chocolates melted or went grey, pasta lost its shape, bread went moldy, color inks misaligned and cigarette machines would jam - all as a result of humidity and heat. Air conditioners eliminated all of these issues and more. Climate control also made the development of much of today’s technology possible. Many advances in medicine, science and hi-tech consumer products have been made possible by climate control devices such as air conditioners.

After years of experimentation with cooling systems, the air conditioner was finally ready to enter American homes. By this time the technology had been improved significantly and with more and more sales to commercial outlets, the air conditioner industry was already doing very well for itself. Growing profits meant that research could be undertaken, helping cooling systems to become smaller as well as cheaper. This made them more accessible to the average homeowner. A huge marketing campaign was launched and air conditioners quickly became a multi-million dollar industry and a permanent fixture in homes across the country.
