Slimline Dishwashers, Integrated Models
What is available - Bosch and Smeg
Slimline dishwashers (also called “compact dishwashers”) – as the name suggests – are designed for use in smaller gaps than traditional under-counter appliances. Slimline models are the same height and depth as normal dishwashers, but are less wide across the front. Standard units are 60cm wide.
Compare this to slimline dishwashers, most of which are 45cm wide. At one quarter smaller, these snug models can make all the difference in a kitchen with limited space. Although the dimensions are significantly different slimlines can also be fully integrated into any US kitchen.
A slimline model dishwasher, because of its reduced internal storage capacity, is usually more suited to a couple or a small family. They are not recommended for large families or for locations where they are likely to receive regular heavy use. However, like a well-designed small car, a good slimline dishwasher may appear small on the outside, but are often quite spacious in the inside. You may have sacrificed a quarter of the exterior size of the machine, but this often equals less loss of space for your dirty dishes. Close inspection of various machines will let you find one with a well thought-out internal arrangement that makes the very most of available dish space. Some particularly spacious brands include Bosch Dishwashers, Siemens and Smeg.
If you are unlucky enough to have a very tight space in which your dishwasher must fit, it is possible to find a slimline dishwasher model that has a removable worktop, which will save you around 3cm. It might not be much, but a few centimeters can make all the difference with some installations.
