What is available: KitchenAid, Fisher & Paykel
One of the newer breed of home dishwashing appliances are the drawer dishwashers. In a major concession to style over function, drawer models allow you to open and close the dishwasher just like any other drawer in the kitchen.
This gives designers the freedom to create more streamlined kitchens without the need for a sometimes bulky and obtrusive full size undercounter dishwasher unit. Two drawer machines are therefore great for kitchens with limited space.
Two Drawer - The Next Generation of Kitchen Aids
The clever thing about some double drawer dishwashers (like some Fisher & Paykel models) is that they’re made up of two independent dishwashers. Therefore, only one of the drawers can be used at a time if there is just a small wash that needs doing. Or you can set one drawer on a delicate wash cycle to care for your cups and china, while the other drawer gets down to the serious heavy duty cleaning of your pots and pans. This is a true kitchen aid!
Many other brands such as KitchenAid and Whirlpool sell single dish drawers, which are great if that is all you require. A single dish drawer also has the advantage of being easily disguised in a kitchen, as they are only half the size of a conventional dishwasher.
The only possible negative aspect of two drawer dishwashers is that because they are a relatively new, high-end kitchen product they are often more expensive than other models by a factor of around 20%. But, for space saving, design-savvy modern appliances like these you may be willing to pay a little more.
